If you have one or more missing teeth, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Leaving missing teeth untreated can lead to gum disease, jawbone weakening and further tooth loss. Fortunately, Dr. Marco Cueva and Dr. Cuong Ha are experienced periodontists who offer several treatment options for missing teeth. They may recommend individual dental implants or implant-supported dentures to replace your missing teeth. If you undergo dental surgery, here are some things to expect once the procedure is complete.

Postoperative Symptoms

Dr. Cueva and his team are committed to making your procedure as comfortable as possible, but you may still experience some initial symptoms, such as:

●        Swelling and tenderness

●        Minor bleeding

●        Bruising around the IV location

●        Pain and grogginess

You may be given pain medication and/or antibiotics, and it is essential to follow the dosage instructions. While many patients experience only minimal pain from dental implants, it is still a good idea to rest and recover for a few days following dental surgery.

Self-Care

You should follow the post-surgical care instructions you receive after your surgery in order to give the treatment procedure the best chance of success. In general, it is important to avoid brushing and flossing around the implant sites until your doctor says you can resume normal oral hygiene, usually after about two weeks. You may also have a special rinse to use. It is important to limit yourself to a list of approved foods. Most patients start with soft cold foods and can move on to normal food after several days. Certain items, such as carbonated drinks and crunchy foods, may not be allowed for a few weeks.
