Mosquitoes
find new hosts by sight (they observe movement); by detecting infra-red
radiation emitted by warm bodies; and by chemical signals (mosquitoes
are attracted to carbon dioxide and lactic acid, among other chemicals).

Mosquito Facts
- Only female mosquitoes attack. The itchy welt that develops is a reaction to the blood thinning agent in a mosquito's saliva.
- During a single bite, the average mosquito drinks roughly 5-millionths of a liter of blood.
- A mosquito can sense her human prey from up to 140 feet away.
- Mosquitoes lay 100 to 300 eggs at a time, on water or damp soil. Their breeding sites are often hidden under planters, in gutters, under leaves, and in tiny puddles.
- Most mosquitoes will never venture more than a mile from their original hatch site.
- Besides over 2700 species of mosquitoes, there are hundreds of species of no-see-ums, black flies, horseflies, deerflies and gnats that bite humans, domesticated animals and livestock. Many attack in large swarms and can be even more of an annoyance than mosquitoes.
Mosquito-Borne Health Risks
West Nile Virus: The first domestic outbreak occurred in 1999 in Queens, New York. This outbreak hospitalized 62 people and killed 7. Symptoms are generally associated with the central nervous system. The disease has become increasingly widespread with most states, including Texas, reporting cases.
Encephalitis: The most threatening in the United States. The virus circulates mainly among birds, although several types of encephalitis are transmitted to humans.
Yellow Fever: The most lethal mosquito spread virus, that has overwhelming affects on human social development.
Dengue Fever. Known as "breakdown fever" for the excruciating pain it causes. Most cases are found in the tropics and subtropics.
