Pyrethrum is derived from the Chrysanthemum flower grown in Kenya and has been used as an insecticide for more than a century. Chrysanthemum flowers are processed into extracts, which provide a highly effective natural insecticide against mosquitos. Pyrethrum is a complex insecticide with the following outstanding properties:
Knockdown Effects. Because of its low toxicity, Pyrethrum has long been preferred for household and agricultural application. Even before it kills, it knocks down and paralyzes insects almost immediately. When exposed to Pyrethrum, the insect is flushed from its hiding place and thrown into a state of nervous disorder. At this point the insect scuttles around erratically, or adopts a confused flight pattern.
Jamming. The jamming phenomenon suggests new uses for Pyrethrum in the battle against diseases spread by mosquitoes. Research has shown small amounts of Pyrethrum can jam the natural "signal" of an insect's food searching mechanism. This results in a lack of desire to feed.
Resistance. The reason is not fully understood, but insects do not become resistant to natural Pyrethrum, as they do with synthetic insecticides. After decades of use, no insect population has ever developed significant resistance to Pyrethrum insecticides.
Installation and Equipment
Precision nozzles, connected to nylon tubing, can be placed on eaves, fence lines, or underground. The EnviromistSM System uses a 55-gallon reservoir, an accurate, solid state timer and motor-driven pump system that runs on a standard 110-volt outlet. The fully automated timer combines reliability with ease-of-use. Simply, set the timer, and at the designated time a light mist of specially formulated Pyrethrum is released into the air, eliminating mosquitoes and other biting insects. Spiders and their webs are virtually eliminated. Flies, gnats, fleas, ticks, and wasps are also controlled.
