All-on-4 is a great option to consider for restoring your smile. However, patients may have questions about this complicated process. Fortunately, our team can help answer any questions you have during an appointment. Here are several questions to bring to your first consultation.
What is All-on-4?
Though this question may seem obvious, considering it is the reason the consultation is scheduled, it is still important. All-on-4 is one of the many restoration options available, and this question opens the door to understanding how it compares to other restoratives. As a preview, All-on-4 implants are four dental implants supporting an entire row or arch of artificial teeth.
What material does the All-on-4 implants consist of?
For those with specific allergies to materials, it is important to review the material of both the implant and the artificial teeth. Dental implants consist of titanium, while the artificial teeth may consist of either acrylic, porcelain, or zirconia material. Therefore, alert the periodontist if there is a history of adverse reactions to these materials or anesthesia, as the latter will be necessary throughout treatment.
How many appointments are necessary?
The number of appointments one will require depends on the individual patient. However, knowing that the process will take several months to complete is important. The exact number depends on the number of teeth needing removal, whether or not gum conditions need to be addressed, and whether bone grafting is needed. This is in addition to the two surgical appointments necessary for inserting the implants and an additional appointment to place the artificial teeth.
Are dietary changes necessary at any time?
Considering that All-on-4 implants replace both archs of teeth, dietary changes will be necessary throughout the process. However, the list may change following each appointment. For example, during the osseointegration process, patients may need to avoid foods that are too hot and those with spice or are heavily seasoned for some time. However, while they heal from their second surgical procedure, the foods they are allowed may change.
What actions are prohibited during this process?
Aside from dietary restrictions, patients will likely be prohibited from certain actions at different times. However, smoking or tobacco consumption, in general, is strictly prohibited throughout the entire process. According to the CDC, tobacco increases the risk of bleeding and inhibits the body's healing process. It is good to note that smokers will likely need to quit for an extended period before beginning the process.
Is the procedure invasive?
The short answer is yes. However, this question opens the door for the periodontist to explain what happens during each surgical procedure. They will also inform patients regarding time off work or school and whether they should arrange a ride home during each appointment.
Prepare for your consultation
All-on-4 can give you the smile of your dreams. However, it is important to prepare for the lengthy process. Consider adding these questions to your list before scheduling your consultation.
