You may have heard about dental implants
and the realistic-looking and feeling restorations they offer. But did you know that dental implants can restore health to your jawbone as well? One complication that is often overlooked about tooth loss is the fact that the jaw often suffers bone density loss. Dental implants, however, encourage the restoration of jawbone density. Here to explain how, is your Allen dentist
, Dr. Marco Cueva. He discusses dental implants
and their vital work with the jawbone.
Tooth Loss and the Jaw
When a tooth’s root leaves the jaw, the body alters it nutrition habits. Rather than continuing to send nutrients to the area vacated by the tooth, the body marks that area as barren and reroutes nutrients to other areas. Unfortunately, the jawbone in the area often suffers malnutrition, resulting in decreased density.
Another factor that affects density is the lack of bone cell stimulation that occurs as a result of tooth loss. Bone cells are stimulated by the forces inflicted on them during biting and chewing, resulting in increased density and a healthier jawbone. However, without a tooth present, no forces can stimulate the bone cells, resulting in density loss.
Dental Implants and the Jawbone
When a dental implant’s post is placed into the jawbone, the body recognizes the post as a tooth’s root and begins sending nutrients to the area once again. These nutrients will help in the restoration of the jawbone, but the benefits of dental implants do not end there. Because the post is present in the jawbone, the forces of chewing and biting can once again be transmitted to the bone cells, prompting greater bone density and a healthier jaw.
