Unlike diamonds, dentures aren’t
forever. Although well-made, high quality dentures are more lightweight and offer a more secure fit than cheaper versions, even the best suction-retained dentures will loosen over time. In fact, you may have to go in to have your dentures refitted about once a year and have them replaced entirely in as few as five years. As the bone tissue along your dental ridge atrophies over time, your dentures begin to slip and slide more easily than before. Unfortunately, ill-fitting dentures can cause a range of serious oral health problems. Today, we’re discussing a few of those problems and how denture alternatives like implant dentures can alleviate them.
Raw, Irritated, or Swollen Gums
We humans tend to favor one side of our mouth when we chew our food. When you wear dentures, the acrylic plates are in near-constant contact with your gums and extra pressure on one side can irritate the sensitive gum tissues. As a result, parts of the gums can swell and raw patches and sores might appear.
Bacterial or Fungal Infections
These sores are easily accessible to oral bacteria and denture wearers who have poor oral hygiene habits or chronic dry mouth are susceptible to bacterial infections in the gums. In addition, failing to take good care of your false teeth will cause the buildup of potentially harmful bacteria on the surface of the denture plates themselves.
Wearing your dentures day and night, not cleaning them properly or frequently enough, diabetes, and eating a high-carb diet can also increase you risk for oral candidiasis, a type of yeast infection that affects the mouth.
Solutions for Loose Dentures
Dental Implant posts, tiny titanium posts that replace missing tooth roots, can be used to secure a full denture plate to your gums without the use of suction or denture creams. Implants retained dentures won’t slip, so you avoid the irritation and infection associated with poorly fitting false teeth. Even better, you don’t have to deal with the embarrassment of dentures that slip or slide when you eat certain foods.
