Vitamin D and Your Teeth
The study in question examined the results found in trials that spanned over sixty years. After analyzing all of the information available to them, the researchers found that over this time period, people with higher levels of vitamin D suffered from 50 percent less tooth decay than those with lower levels. The fact that the percentage is so high is very promising and supports a cavity-fighting role for vitamin D. However, many researchers are disputing these findings. They argue that because so much of the information is outdated that the results are not valid.
Will Vitamin D Make a Difference?
While there is not yet a consensus about the vitamin’s cavity-fighting potential, vitamin D is, nonetheless, a useful nutrient for overall health. Thus it makes sense to get an adequate supply of vitamin D even if it turns out that it does not fight against tooth decay. Look to add salmon and tuna to your diet, and consider a vitamin D supplement. Getting out in the sun can also encourage the synthesis of vitamin D. Just be sure that you limit your exposure to the sun and wear sunscreen.
Fighting Tooth Decay
While vitamin D may be a powerful ally in the fight against tooth decay, it is no replacement for thorough homecare. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day.
