Allen Implant Specialist Discusses Bone Grafts

Do you suffer from one or more missing teeth? The loss of even a single tooth may threaten the health and stability of your smile. In order to return a smile to full function and health, your Allen implant specialist, Dr. Marco Cueva, may recommend dental implants. Before placing the implants, some patients may require a bone graft. In today’s blog, Dr. Cueva explains how a bone graft may be necessary to secure your restorations.

What is a Bone Graft?

A bone graft involves augmenting the jawbone tissue with either natural or processed bone. After applying the new bone, it will bond with your existing bone tissue, increasing jawbone density.

When Does a Patient Require a Bone Graft?

A dental implant can be used to replace a single tooth, anchor a bridge, or even secure a full set of dentures. Placing an implant involves inserting a biocompatible titanium post into the jawbone tissue. The bone will bond with the post, holding your implant in place.

To prevent implant failure, the patient’s jawbone needs to be able to support the implant posts. Unfortunately, many of the factors that have led to tooth loss often weaken the jawbone tissue, such as advanced gum disease, also known as periodontitis. If during the initial examination Dr. Cueva discovers the bone tissue can’t support the implant, he may prescribe a bone graft. As a trained periodontist, he can also provide the treatment necessary to address the presence of gum disease, restoring your smile to optimal health.
