Oral surgery is often recommended to address a number of serious dental issues, including gum disease and oral cancer. Patients may also receive oral surgery to improve smile aesthetics, including correcting the appearance of gummy smiles. In today’s blog, your Allen periodontist, Dr. Marco Cueva, answers your questions about our oral surgery procedures.
Frequently Asked Questions About Oral Surgery
Question: Do you perform oral biopsies?
Answer: Yes. During checkups, your Allen periodontist will perform an oral cancer screening. If he discovers any areas that appear precancerous or contain lesions, he may recommend a biopsy. During this procedure, a sample of the lesion will be removed and tested for oral cancer. Early treatment increases the chances of a full recovery.
Question: Will I require oral surgery to remove my wisdom teeth?
Answer: In rare cases, wisdom teeth may be able to erupt with no difficulty. However, in most situations, wisdom may erupt abnormally, causing misalignment or even leading to painful dental infection. If this is the case, Dr. Cueva will extract the wisdom teeth with oral surgery, preserving your smile.
Question: What is bone grafting?
Answer: Replacing missing teeth with innovative dental implants require adequate bone tissue. If there isn’t enough bone tissue to support the implant, Dr. Cueva may prescribe a bone graft. During oral surgery, ether natural or processed bone will be grafted onto your jawbone to support your new restoration.
Question: When does a patient require periodontal surgery?
Answer: Gum disease threatens the health and stability of your smile. To address advanced gum disease, you may require oral surgery. Gum disease forms when inflamed gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets at the gum line. Bacteria invade these pockets, causing periodontal disease. During surgery, we will fold back the pockets and remove the bacteria and infected tissue, restoring the health of your gums.
