If you are missing teeth, you obviously desire natural-looking restorations. Maybe you’ve struggled for years with loose fitting dentures, and you are ready for new teeth that will allow you to eat and speak with ease. You’ve probably read a lot about implant-supported dentures, but if you suffer from dental anxiety, you may hesitate to undergo oral surgery. Dr. Cueva understands that dental phobia is a real problem, but he doesn’t think it should keep you from getting the lifelike restorations you desire. Fortunately, when you have implant dentures placed with sedation you can enjoy relaxed, comfortable treatment. Our Allen, TX
practice offers several types of sedation, and Dr. Cueva will help you choose the right one for your needs.
What are the Different Types of Sedation?
We offer three options to ease your anxiety:
- Nitrous oxide: You will breathe in this colorless, odorless gas also known as “laughing gas.” The gas will help you feel comfortable and at ease, and many patients even experience a sense of euphoria.
- Oral conscious sedation: You will be given strong anti-anxiety pills to take at home before your appointment. If needed you can take more medication in the office. Under the influence of the pills, you will be able to answer questions and follow instructions, but you will feel calm and comfortable. In fact, you probably won’t even remember the implant procedure after you return home.
- IV sedation: This form of sedation induces a “twilight sleep.” Again, you will be able to answer questions, but you will not be fully aware of what’s going on around you, and you probably won’t remember your treatment. With both IV and oral conscious sedation, our dental staff will carefully monitor your vital signs to ensure your safety during treatment.
Of course, with all implant procedures, you will be given local anesthetic. Sedation is simply intended to address the psychological aspects of oral surgery.
Which One Is Right for Me?
The type of sedation you choose depends on your anxiety level and the procedure you are getting ready to undergo. IV sedation is the strongest form, so if you experience severe stress, this may be the right choice for you. Dr. Cueva will help you select the right type so that you feel completely at ease during your treatment.
What Are the Advantages of Sedation?
Dental anxiety is a common problem that keeps a large portion of adults from seeking the treatment they need. Thanks to sedation dentistry, you receive implant-supported dentures without stress. In turn, this means that you can enjoy a well functioning, beautiful smile for the rest of your life.
