Women and Gum Disease

periodontaldisease
The Centers for Disease Control recently conducted a study on the prevalence of gum disease in the United States. The results show that over 64.7 million Americans suffer form periodontal disease and that this serious health issue effects more women then men. In fact, 56.4% of women exhibit the symptoms of gum disease while only 38.4% of men do. Your Allen TX periodontist, Dr. Marco Cueva, discusses women’s gum disease risk and recommends preventive options.

The Causes and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease leads to a number of uncomfortable symptoms, including sore, red gums that bleed easily. Without treatment, gum disease also causes the connective tissue between the gums and teeth to dissolve, causing loose teeth and potentially leading to tooth loss. Whether through infection or inflammation, gum disease occurs when the gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets at the gum line. These pockets expose sensitive tissue to bacteria, which can cause periodontal disease to develop. A variety of factors can cause gum disease, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Medication
  • Illness
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Genetics

If you experience the symptoms of gum disease, please schedule a consultation with your Allen TX implant specialist today for a diagnosis and to start a course of treatment.

The Risk of Periodontal Disease

Factors behind a woman’s increased gum disease risk include:

  • Puberty: The increased level of hormones boosts blood flow to the gums, leaving them sensitive to plaque and irritation and susceptible to periodontal disease.
  • Menstruation: For many women, menstruation often causes the onset of gingivitis. The gums become sore and can bleed easily, leaving them especially vulnerable to the onset of gum disease.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, women are often unable to undergo dental treatment. Combined with hormonal changes, this creates a high periodontal disease risk. Prior to getting pregnant, schedule a consultation with your Allen TX implant specialist.
  • Menopause: Many women undergoing menopause report dry mouth and gingival discomfort. If so, you should see Dr. Cueva right away to assess your risk of developing periodontal disease.

To protect your periodontal health, always attend regular checkups and cleanings and practice thorough homecare, including brushing and flossing on a daily basis.
